12 perspectives on the self: Nadar’s Photos in Music

In 2019, InVocare was chosen as a ‘Selected Promising Ensemble’ during the International Young Artist Presentation in Antwerp. In 2020, these Swiss artists will return to Belgium during AlbaNova "Lift Off" with a program that creates a musical and visual polyphonic experience of the music played.

Inspired by Nadar’s self-portraits this programme explores the play between projection and introspection in 16th and 17th century madrigals.

Just as Nadar’s series of self-portraits from around 1865 showing him from 12 different angles turning in a circular movement around him, the madrigals revolve around the same topics of love and desire, exploring 12 inner states of the (loving) self: Negotiation of conflicting needs and feelings of hope and desperation (L’humor sincero, My heart alas), indulgence in moments of bliss (Sweet stay a while) or melancholy (Stay, time, awhile), outbreaks of grief and pain (Ahi, dispietata morte) as well as silent reflection and retrospection (Io mo vivea del mio languir contento). Much like in a selfie, the “self” is subject and object of all chosen madrigals and a musical and visual polyphonic experience of this music is created.

InVocare was born from the AVES (Advanced Vocal Ensemble Studies) programme at Schola Cantorum Basiliensis specialising in English and Italian madrigals from the 16th and 17th centuries. With members originating from five continents, they are keen madrigalists who work to let the music affect and move listeners through exquisite tuning, hushed silence, the spoken word and unconventional settings on stage.

2020 sees InVocare touring major festivals around Europe including Utrecht Early Music Festival, Laus Polyphoniae, Meer Stemmig Gent, AlbaNova, and others.
